Through the looking glass
Genetically speaking Estonian double helixes have a nice pinch of Asian to them. Many Estonians observe our planet and its inhabitants through camera lens. Looking through the camera is also considered more polite and distanced way, especially when it comes down to asses, girls or both. Baudrillard, Bourdieu, Deleuze and other froggymen probably would have on say on that...

Second Hand Fashion Show

Fashionistas try to give impression, that it's all about creativity and expression. Well, normally it's just the big bucks - and it's OK, because there wouldn't be no modern fashion industry without mass productions of clothing. But those facts of life don't mean one cannot produce fashion and glam with much less money. Yes, we can. Second hand fashion show also reveals a well know secret - what was cool in the days before, can be cool any day in future.

Fashion at Pärmivabrik

A shot from a triple-birthday alternative-music party from last days of 2009 at Tartu Pärmivabrik - people in their natural poses and environment. They just are the fashion - their attitude, style and even positioning is naturally fashionable.

Guitar Hero Groupies

This is true, Estonia has too many women. This means that even kids good at Guitar Hero get their fair share of gorgeous fans!

O&O - Operators Outfit

On a hot or semi-hot summer day an operator should always wear something what distracts a subject off the camera. The above is a perfect sample of an operator outfit. Only thing which would top that, would be top-less or bare naked. But this example is more practical - bikini against the insects and rubber boots against the accidental swamps.

Cool Glasses

It can be that Zavood is the best place to look for new looks in Tartu.

The reason is simple: people turning up are crazy enough not to give a shit what anybody thinks.

This kind of attitude produces gold in style. Enjoy.

Corpsing, Tartu Style

Corpsing is a winning trend amongst punk students in Tartu. Arrival of the spring brings us a variety of different presentations and corpsing styles indoors and outdoors. This is an example I happened to witness last May in Tartu. This person is silently protesting against the stupidity of the new alchohol sale law in Estonia.

Tatoos are Complicated, Stamping's Easy

Take a stamp... and stamp yourself. Randomly, on your body, on your head or even on your private parts - or wherever you want - who cares, it looks cool.

Nude Casual

Traditional Estonian swimming suit is the same that was worn by Adam and Eve before they messed it up at god's place. It's not a hippie camp, it's a literary seminar (Lätete pääl) and there are some distinguished Estonian writers in the picture. Photo by Priit Salumaa, July 2007 in Ketta

Elegant Napping

The idea one feeling good has not only to do with the looks but also how you present yourself. In the photo above you can see a typical representative of coat-wearing zavood-person. His looks are not flashy, and he emphasizes his looks with his über calm behavior. What else would strike out you and your looks, than a nap on a beer soaked pool table in the middle of a multi-crowded bar.

Cold Days - Layer Cake

One wonderful characteristics of the Estonian climate can be described as "shitty ski weather" ("sitt suusailm"). During the last 15 years or so the sunny / snowy Estonia has turned into a muddy / rainy Estonia. This means that our weather is usually quite cold but the lack of snow doesn't allow us to go outside and ski. This is why we stay inside and drink.
Ok, but our winter is still wonderful - the cold enough weather makes people dress up in layers. That enables the use of different styles at once - for outdoor and indoor conditions. In addition, alcohol makes girls easy.
The photo above describes an outer shell - warm and woolly enough to keep the cold outside and heat inside. The photo below depicts the inner shell, which lets it all out, the sense of style and feminine grace, the sex appeal of the subject.

Conclusion: The shitty ski weather helps us wear different styles at once - something from summer and winter wardrobes. It also helps the ugly Estonian men to get laid once in a while.

Glam-Punk Twin-Style

Using twins is an unexploited but a very powerful styling tool that an experienced stylist can use just as well as he can use a piece of clothing or some make-up. The stylist can build the whole concept on just one feature of the subject-pair.
